CBI takes over investigation of Hathras Case
On September 14, an FIR was filed at Chandpa police station in Hathras. It was mentioned in the FIR that the accused tried to strangle the victim in a field. The charges of murder and gang rape were added in the FIR after the woman had passed away at a Delhi hospital on September 29.
CBI spokesperson RK Gaur has stated- “The case has been registered by the CBI on the request of Uttar Pradesh Government and further notification from Government of India”
A team has been constituted by the CBI to investigate the matter and a probe is on.
The police had later filed 21 cases across the state against, among other charges, attempts to “incite caste and communal tension and defame the state government” using social media platforms and public meetings. The charges include sedition, criminal conspiracy, and promoting enmity.
As many as 60 security personnel were deployed outside the victim's house in Hathras. A week after the UP government said it would hand over the probe into the alleged gangrape and death of the 19-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras to the CBI, following outrage over the state police’s handling of the incident and hurried cremation of the victim’s body.
